SCIENCE-BASED SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Reserve an educational, live snake program by Serpentations llc to be presented right in your classroom.

These programs are designed to actively engage your students in their understanding of important science concepts.

2020 COLORADO ACADEMIC

SCIENCE STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

PRESCHOOL: STANDARD 2. LIFE SCIENCE

Recognize that living things have unique characteristic and basic needs that can be observed and studied.

Recognize that living things develop in predictable patterns.

KINDERGARTEN: STANDARD 2. LIFE SCIENCE

To live and grow, animals obtain food they need from plants or other animals….

KINDERGARTEN: STANDARD 3. EARTH SCIENCE

Plants and animals meet their needs in their habitats and impact one another…

1st GRADE: STANDARD 2. LIFE SCIENCE

All organisms have external parts that they use to perform daily functions.

Young organisms are very much, but not exactly, like their parents, and resemble other organisms of the same kind.

2nd GRADE: STANDARD 2. LIFE SCIENCE

A range of different organisms lives in different places.

3rd GRADE: STANDARD 2. LIFE SCIENCE

Organisms have unique and diverse life cycles.

Being part of a group helps animals obtain food, defend themselves and cope with changes.

Different organisms vary in how they look and function because they have different inherited information; the environment also affects the traits that an organism develops.

Sometimes differences in characteristics between individuals of the same species provide advantages in survival and reproduction.

4th GRADE: STANDARD 2. LIFE SCIENCE

Organisms have both internal and external structures that serve various functions.

MIDDLE SCHOOL: STANDARD 2. LIFE SCIENCE

Organisms reproduce, either sexually or asexually, and transfer their genetic information to their offspring.

Organisms and populations of organisms are dependent on their environmental interactions both with other living things and with nonliving.

Heredity explains why offspring resemble, but are not identical to, their parents and is a unifying biological principle.

Genetic variations among individuals in a population give some individuals an advantage in surviving and reproduction in their environment.

Adaptation by natural selection acting over generations is one important process by which species change over time in response to changes in environmental conditions.

HIGH SCHOOL: STANDARD 2. LIFE SCIENCE

Organisms interact with the living and nonliving components of the environment to obtain matter and energy.

Organisms interact in groups to benefit the species.

The characteristics of one generation are dependent upon the genetic information inherited from previous generations.

Variation between individuals results from genetic and environmental factors.

Genetic variation among organisms affects survival and reproduction.

The environment influences survival and reproduction of organisms over multiple generations.

“Dear Mr. Dempsey, you are so asome techr on the plenit.”

SNAKE ID & SAFETY TALKS

An ounce of prevention……

…… is worth a pound of cure.”

Ben Franklin

Contact Serpentations llc to present an in-depth, snake identification and safety discussion with your audience who may often live / work / play in snake habitats.

Snakes are incredibly beneficial and valuable members in ecosystems. Most are not dangerous to humans, in fact over 90% of snake species in the United States are harmless to homo sapiens. Unfortunately many snakes are destroyed simply because of fear and incorrect assumptions.

An informative, live snake presentation by Serpentations llc will add “ounces” to your audience’s prevention knowledge by discussing snake behaviors / characteristics and dispelling the many misconceptions about these shy, elusive creatures.

“Thanks again for a magical program Mike!!! I can always count on you for your exceptional knowledge and professionalism!!”

Jody M., Park Naturalist Supervisor (Retired), Bear Creek Lake Park

MIKE DEMPSEY – NATURALIST

Mike has presented dynamic, engaging, environmental education programs to audiences of all ages for over 9 years. Throughout his career serving as a naturalist / park ranger / Certified Interpretive Guide at Colorado Parks & Wildlife, Jefferson County Open Space and for the City of Arvada, he has shared many, memorable outdoor discoveries with the public.

Once an architectural designer, he later traded in his drafting table and computer for a log bench under a tree to lead interpretive nature programs for eager school children and curious adults. However, there was one particular wildlife topic that was constantly being brought up by his audiences…….snakes! “Were there any ‘poisonous’ ones in the area?” “What do I do if I see one?” “How do I keep myself / my kids / my pet safe from snakes?”

Questions and valid concerns like these ignited his goal to form Serpentations llc to increase the public’s knowledge and awareness of these often misunderstood and ecologically valuable creatures.

“Mike, if you ever want to use your communication skills in a classroom full of wild freshmen, CEC would love to have you.”

David M., CEC Early College
